Trends In Summer Camp
FACT: There are almost 10,000 children's summer camps in the United States (many of which are close to 100 years old). Over six million children attend these camps each summer.
TRENDS: DID YOU KNOW?
Filling the Gap: In the past children attended camp through age 15. With their college years not beginning until age 17 or 18, parents were left with a 2 - 4 year gap. Where there is demand a supply soon follows. Travel programs (both domestic and overseas), academic enrichment, community service, wilderness adventure, and exotic Caribbean programs are some of the more popular and exciting opportunities for todays senior campers. These specialized programs often accommodate children through ages 17 and 18.
Here They Come: As the cold war ended and as trade barriers have opened, there has been a significant rise in the number of children coming from other countries throughout the world to the United States to experience the uniquely American phenomenon of Summer Camp. Inquiries from oversees have increased by approximately 50% over the past five years. Many of these families are primarily interested in an immersion into American culture, recreation and to improve their children's English language skills. Hence, many Camp Directors quite receptive to incorporating an international flavor to their camps, offer English as a second language (ESL) as an additional component to their program. For the American child, who might otherwise never meet or interact socially with children from other countries, there is much to benefit from this recent trend. In the peaceful, recreational and educational setting of Summer Camp, children from all over the world are coming together to enjoy activities, gain an appreciation for the diversity of the world's many cultures, and to learn and improve communication and develop friendships.
